Coach Katherine is returning for her third full year with MYTF. Her 400M competitive running days are long gone, but her love of track remains strong, and she still enjoys running for recreation. Katherine came to MYTF after three years of coaching Girls on the Run at Great Falls Elementary, and has also served as an assistant coach for McLean Youth Soccer and Volleyball. Coach Katherine is a certified personal trainer, and a 20-year veteran of the fitness industry. She currently lives in McLean with her husband and two teenage daughters.
Assistant Coach: Scott Choi
Scott Choi grew up in Alexandria and attended St. Stephen's high school where he played varsity football and indoor track. His favorite events were the 55 meter indoor sprint and long lump. Currently, he participates in Olympic triathlons, helps coach his son's lacrosse team, and coaches track and field. He believes that both individual and team sports can teach children the values of hard work and perseverance, and enjoys helping all young athletes achieve their goals.
Assistant Coach: Monte Hawkins
Monte is excited to be in his first year with MYTF where he works with the 7 and 8 year olds. Monte is originally from Kansas City where he ran cross country and track in high school and was a three time letter winner at the University of Tulsa where he specialized in the mile, running a personal best of 4:10. Monte continues to compete, albeit much more slowly. Most recently he has tackled some longer distances (2009 Boston Marathon) and different competitions (2007 Half-Ironman Triathlon World Championships). Monte is a manager in the Federal Government and lives in Arlington with his wife Katrina, daughter Hannah (a MYTF athlete), and son Flynn (future MYTF athlete).
Assistant Coach: Serena Wilson
Coach Serena has been a distance runner for forty years with most of those miles logged in trails around the Washington Metro area. She went to high school in New England, where she was captain of four varsity teams. Serena has cycled thousands of miles through the Canadian Rockies and several US States, canoed in the Amazon rainforest, lived with tribes in Papua New Guinea and is now trying to earn her black belt in Tai Kwon Do. She lives in Great Falls with her husband and two teenage daughters.
Assistant Coaches: Adair, Danielle, and Nick Maynard
Assisting us since the Fall 2013 season are three McLean High School athletes: Adair, Danielle, and Nick Maynard. Adair is a senior at McLean High School (MHS), while Nick and Danielle are juniors. All three are members of the MHS Track Team for both indoor and outdoor seasons, and have generously volunteered their time to help younger runners in the community.
Adair is an accomplished sprinter at McLean, having participated in the 100M, 200M, 300M, and 400M, 300M hurdles, and discus. She was also selected for the MHS Liberty District and Northern Region Championships Team, and is planning to attend Virginia Tech in the Fall. Danielle is a jumper, sprinter, and cross country runner, and also a member of the MHS District and Regional teams. Nick is a distance runner specializing in the 800M, 1600M, and cross-country races. Notably, both Danielle and Nick are veterans of the MYTF program prior to their high school careers!
Assistant Coach: Matt Ohlson
In his 3rd season with MYTF, Matt is now a senior at McLean High School. He is a seasoned competitor in shot put and discus throwing, and will be helping to coach throwing events for McLean Youth Track & Field. Matt is one of the top throwers in the Northern Region, and he qualified for the Virginia State Championship in shot put this winter. Matt also has competed in the USATF Junior Olympics in shot put. He is planning to attend the University of Virginia after graduation.
Administrator: Mickey Skelton
Mickey is a parent volunteer who coordinates the various activities behind the scene. Her own track experience was limited to serving as an athletic trainer in both high school and college for both the men's and women's teams, but as a result, she knows the formats, events, and issues specific to Track and Field. It is her many years of project management experience though that apply to this role, and she tries to use them to help make the MYTF experience a smooth and enjoyable one for all families. She and her husband Michael are proud parents to son Ricky, who is in his sixth season with MYTF as a runner, and daughter Katie, who can often be found helping Coach Adam run the Long Jump event.
